Knowing Your Real Priorities

Your real priorities aren't what you say. They're what you do.

Most men would say their family is their top priority. But look at their calendars and their attention, and a different picture emerges. Work gets the best hours. Screens get the evening. Family gets the exhausted leftovers. The gap between stated priorities and actual priorities is where regret lives.

Your real priorities are revealed by two things: your calendar and your bank account. How you spend time and money tells the true story of what matters most.

The Priority Test

Calendar audit: Look at how your time is actually spent. What gets the most? What gets protected versus bumped?

Attention audit: Where does your focus go? Your mental energy? Your presence?

Financial audit: What do you invest in? What you spend on reveals what you value.

You can tell me what matters to you, but I can look at your schedule and tell you what actually does. The gap between stated and actual priorities is where most men need to do the hardest work.

Common Priority Gaps

  • Saying family is first, but work always wins scheduling conflicts
  • Saying marriage matters, but date night is the first thing cut
  • Saying health is important, but never making time for exercise
  • Saying faith matters, but spiritual practices are inconsistent
  • Saying kids are priority, but screens get more attention

Aligning Priorities

Name them: Write down what you say matters most, in order.

Audit them: Compare to how you actually spend time and money.

Adjust them: Make calendar changes to match stated priorities.

Protect them: Don't let lesser things crowd out greater ones.

Your Action Steps

This week: List your top five priorities. Then look at your calendar. Do they match?

This month: Make one concrete change to better align time with stated values.

This quarter: Ask your wife and kids if they feel prioritized. Listen without defending.
