Setting Goals That Work
Goals show direction. Systems get you there.
Most men set goals the wrong way. They make a list on January 1st, feel motivated for two weeks, and quietly abandon everything by February. The problem isn't lack of willpower. It's a failure to understand how lasting change actually happens.
Goals matter because they give you direction. But goals alone don't produce change. Systems, habits, and consistent action are what move you from where you are to where you want to be.
Why Goals Fail
Too vague: "Get in shape" isn't a goal. "Exercise three times a week" is a system that could lead there.
Too many: Focus gets diluted when you're chasing ten things at once. Fewer goals, more focus.
No system: The goal is the destination. You need a map and vehicle to get there.
Willpower dependent: Motivation fades. Systems that don't require constant motivation succeed.
You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Build habits and structures that move you toward what you want automatically.
Better Approach
Clarify what you actually want: Be specific. Not "better marriage" but "weekly date night and daily connection time."
Build systems: What habits, structures, and routines will make this inevitable? Focus on the daily actions.
Start small: Tiny consistent actions beat ambitious sporadic ones. Build momentum gradually.
Track and adjust: Measure what matters. When something isn't working, change the system.
Get accountability: Share your goals with someone who will check on progress.
Goals Across Life Areas
- Faith: What spiritual habits are you building?
- Marriage: How are you intentionally investing in your wife?
- Family: What kind of father are you becoming?
- Health: How are you caring for your body?
- Work: What are you building professionally?
- Growth: How are you developing as a person?
Your Action Steps
This week: Identify one goal that matters. Just one. Get specific about what success looks like.
This month: Build a system around that goal. What daily or weekly actions will move you toward it?
This quarter: Evaluate and adjust. Is the system working? What needs to change?
