Navigating Seasons of Life

Every season has its demands and its gifts. Know which one you're in.

Life isn't static. It moves through seasons, each with unique demands, opportunities, and challenges. The man with young children at home is in a different season than the empty-nester. The man building a career is in a different season than the one preparing for retirement. Frustration often comes from trying to live in a season you're not actually in.

Wisdom is knowing your season and living accordingly, neither rushing ahead nor clinging to what's past.

Common Seasons

Young and single: Building foundation, exploring options, establishing identity.

Newly married: Adjusting to partnership, creating shared rhythms.

Young kids: Intense demands, limited margin, building family culture.

School-age kids: More complexity, more activity, more influence from outside.

Teenagers: Shifting relationships, increasing independence, preparing for launch.

Empty nest: Rediscovering marriage, new purpose, increased freedom.

Later years: Legacy focus, mentoring, finishing well.

The man who wishes his kids were older so he'd have more free time will one day wish they were young again. The season you're in has gifts that won't come again. Don't miss them by wishing you were somewhere else.

Living Well in Your Season

  • Accept its demands: This season requires what it requires
  • Receive its gifts: What can only happen now?
  • Avoid comparison: His season isn't your season
  • Prepare for the next: What's coming around the corner?
  • Don't rush it: Each season has its proper duration

When Seasons Transition

Season changes can be disorienting. What worked before doesn't work now. Your identity might be tied to a season that's ending. Give yourself grace in transitions. Name what you're losing. Open yourself to what's emerging. Transitions are hard but necessary.

Your Action Steps

This week: Name your current season. What defines it?

This month: Identify what this season offers that won't last. Embrace it.

This quarter: Consider what's ahead. How do you prepare without rushing?
