The Practice of Sabbath Rest
Rest isn't weakness. It's obedience.
God rested on the seventh day. Not because He was tired, but to establish a pattern. Then He commanded His people to do the same. One day in seven, stop. Stop working, stop producing, stop striving. Rest. In our always-on culture, this feels almost radical. But it's a gift, not a burden.
Sabbath is a declaration: the world doesn't depend on you. You can stop, and things will be okay. That's an act of trust.
What Sabbath Is
Stopping: Ceasing from work and productivity.
Resting: Allowing body and soul to replenish.
Delighting: Enjoying God's gifts without guilt.
Worshiping: Centering on God rather than work.
If you can't stop working, work has become your master. Sabbath is a weekly declaration that you serve God, not productivity. It's a discipline that frees rather than binds.
Why Men Resist Rest
- Identity in work: Worth tied to productivity
- Fear: What if things fall apart?
- Guilt: Feeling lazy when not productive
- Habit: Always being busy has become normal
- Avoidance: Rest means facing things you're running from
Practicing Sabbath
Pick a day: Doesn't have to be Sunday. Choose what works.
Plan for it: Finish work before so you can truly stop.
Protect it: Say no to what intrudes.
Fill it well: Not just absence of work but presence of rest, joy, connection.
Start small: If a full day feels impossible, start with hours.
Your Action Steps
This week: Take a few hours of true rest. No work, no guilt.
This month: Build toward a full day of sabbath practice weekly.
This quarter: Evaluate: Does sabbath feel like gift or burden? Adjust accordingly.
