Fatherhood
Blessing Your Kids
Your words carry a father's weight. Speak life over them.
Throughout Scripture, fathers blessed their children. The blessing wasn't just nice words; it was the transfer of identity, purpose, and belonging. A father's blessing said: "You are mine. You are valued. You have a future." Children who receive a father's blessing grow up differently than those who don't.
Modern fathers have often lost this practice. We correct, instruct, and sometimes encourage, but rarely do we formally and intentionally bless. Your kids are waiting for words from you that no one else can speak.
What a Blessing Includes
Meaningful touch: A hand on the shoulder, a hug, physical presence that communicates connection.
Spoken words: Verbally expressing love, value, and hope for their future.
High value: Communicating that they are treasured and precious.
Special future: Speaking belief in who they're becoming and what they can do.
Active commitment: Pledging your ongoing presence and support.
Every child asks the same question: "Dad, do you love me? Am I valuable? Do you believe in me?" Your blessing answers all three with a resounding yes.
How to Bless
- Make it regular: at bedtime, before school, at milestones
- Be specific: mention character qualities you see in them
- Speak to their future: express hope for who they're becoming
- Use touch: a hand on the head or shoulder adds weight
- Pray over them: invite God into the blessing
For Kids at Any Age
Young children absorb blessing naturally. Teens, though they may act indifferent, need it desperately. Adult children still long to hear it. It's never too late to start blessing your kids, and they're never too old to receive it.
Your Action Steps
This week: Speak a blessing over each of your children. Make it intentional.
This month: Build a regular rhythm of blessing, perhaps at bedtime or before they leave for school.
This quarter: Write a blessing letter to each child. Something they can keep.
