When to Get Professional Help

Asking for help isn't weakness. It's wisdom.

Some struggles require more than willpower, books, or conversations with friends. Professional help: whether from a counselor, therapist, or coach can be the difference between staying stuck and breaking through. Seeking help isn't a sign of weakness; it's a sign you're serious about change.

If any of the following describe your situation, consider reaching out to a professional.

Signs You May Need Help

  • You've been stuck in the same patterns for years despite trying to change
  • Your marriage is in serious trouble and you can't seem to break through
  • Anxiety or depression is affecting your ability to function
  • Past trauma is showing up in present relationships
  • Addictive behaviors are controlling your life
  • Anger is damaging relationships or your own peace
  • You're experiencing thoughts of self-harm
  • You feel overwhelmed and don't know where to start
Strong men get help when they need it. The weakest move is pretending you don't need support when your life is falling apart. The strongest move is being humble enough to let someone help you.

Types of Professional Help

Licensed Counselor or Therapist: For mental health issues, trauma, depression, anxiety. Look for someone licensed (LPC, LMFT, LCSW) and, if faith matters to you, someone who integrates faith into their practice.

Marriage Counselor: For relationship issues that you can't resolve on your own. Both spouses should attend. Look for someone trained in evidence-based approaches.

Coach: For growth, accountability, and achieving specific goals. Coaches focus more on the future than the past. Great for leadership development, career transitions, or personal growth.

Psychiatrist: If medication might help with mental health issues. They can diagnose and prescribe. Often works alongside a therapist.
